Merrydale Manor Wedding Photographer
I've photographed at least 12 weddings at Merrydale Manor, from a Christmas week wedding with a gospel choir to a spring day with ice cream on the lawn and a bouquet thrown off a balcony.
Check my availabilityMerrydale Manor is one of the most in-demand wedding venues in the North West, and one of my favourite places to work.
My first Merrydale wedding was Laura and Oli's in August 2019, and I've been back at least 11 times since. I've shot this venue in sunshine, in December rain and everything in between. It's also where one of my drones lives now. At Gemma and Tyrone's wedding it went down in the lake, and as far as I know, it's still down there.
This page is everything I know about getting great photos at Merrydale: where the best spots are, how to plan your day around the light, what happens when it rains, and seven real weddings so you can see the venue across the year. Last updated September 2026.

The best photo spots at Merrydale Manor
Getting ready
The bride's side gets ready in the bridal suite in the Manor House, or the Bridal Lodge. Laura started her day in the Lodge before the whole party moved across to the manor. The groom's side get the Cave by the car park (you'll also hear it called the Man Cave or the groom's room): arcade games, a pool table and giant bottle top signs on the walls, so the groomsmen have plenty to keep them busy.
Merrydale's staircase is made for a first look. Bethany came down it to her mum, her dad and her bridesmaids waiting at the bottom, and her dad was gone the moment she hugged him.
The ceremony
The Ceremony Room is the big timber building with the clock tower on top. Inside it's oak beams, crystal chandeliers, flowers hanging from the beams and candles all the way down the aisle, with a huge glass end that glows after dark. All that glass means the light does half the work before I've even started.
The venue also offers outdoor ceremonies, weather permitting.
Confetti
Straight out of the Ceremony Room door and into a confetti tunnel is the classic Merrydale move. Gemma and Tyrone's was a proper one. At Bethany and Dean's, guests grabbed petals from wicker baskets and let rip with the clock tower right behind them. In December, Abbie and Jamie did theirs inside, straight back down the aisle. In December that is the smart move.
Drinks and group photos
Family formals happen on the lawn in front of the hedges, or in the hedge garden, which has room for a big group and gives a clean green backdrop. Nobody ends up hiding behind a tall uncle.
Want every single guest in one photo? I send the drone up over the lawn. The striped grass looks brilliant from up there. Then there's the balcony: Bethany threw her bouquet off it to the crowd below, and the scramble was fierce.
Portraits
- The lake, fountain and wooden jetty. A real lake, so real reflections, no mirror tricks needed. The octagonal platform at the end of the jetty looks brilliant from the drone too
- The long grass, for the last of the sun
- Blue hour at the lake. Big old trees, the whole lot reflected in the water
- The fairy light gazebo in the gardens, great once the light drops
- The front of the house: red brick, clipped topiary on the lawns
- The copper hedge and the floral wall, lovely backgrounds even on a flat grey day
- The staircase and candlelight after dark, especially in winter when the venue is dressed with garlands and candles
The evening
The reception room has a ceiling of hanging crystal lights, and the dance floor is starlit, so the party photos have colour built in before I've added any of my own. Bethany and Dean finished the night with sparklers out in the dark.
Planning your Merrydale day around the light
My couple portraits are two or three 10 minute sessions, not one long disappearing act. The first while your guests are being seated for the wedding breakfast, the second at golden hour, and a third after dark if you want night photos. You're back with your guests before anyone notices you've gone.
Registrar slots are 12pm, 2pm or 4pm. Two real examples: Maddie and Aaron's February wedding had the ceremony at 2pm, dinner at 4pm and the evening reception at 7:30pm. Bethany and Dean's April wedding also had a 2pm ceremony, grey first thing and proper golden sunshine by the evening.
Spring
The good light arrives in the evening. At Bethany and Dean's we went down to the lake after the wedding breakfast while the sun was still out, caught the sunset behind the trees a bit later, then nipped back out after the cake cutting for blue hour. Three short trips, straight back to the party each time.
Summer
The best light arrives late, once the evening is under way. Leave a little gap in the timeline for the lake.
Winter
Daylight goes by late afternoon, so outdoor portraits happen soon after the ceremony, then it's candlelight, fairy lights and flash.
What if it rains at Merrydale?
It rained on Abbie and Jamie, obviously, it was December. Confetti went inside, and portraits happened by candlelight and on the staircase.
This is where my day job helps. I co-run Flash Masters, a flash photography education community for photographers all over the world, so dark, wet and grey doesn't frighten me. Rain means I bring the light with me. And if you fancy it, a couple of minutes out in the rain can make the best photo of the day. Laura and Oli stood out under an umbrella at night, and it paid off.

Merrydale Manor wedding FAQs
Where is Merrydale Manor?
On Chelford Lane in Over Peover, near Knutsford in Cheshire. The postcode is WA16 8UG.
Have you photographed weddings at Merrydale Manor before?
Yes, at least 12 of them, in spring, summer and winter, in sunshine and in December rain. Seven are on my blog to look through in full.
Where are family group photos taken at Merrydale Manor?
On the lawn in front of the hedges, or in the hedge garden, which has room for a big group and a clean green backdrop.
Can we get a photo of all our guests together at Merrydale Manor?
Yes. I send the drone up over the lawn and get everyone in one shot. I did exactly that at Bethany and Dean's wedding. The drone comes as part of my coverage, weather permitting.
What happens with photos if it rains at Merrydale Manor?
Confetti moves inside down the aisle, and portraits move to the staircase, candlelight and the Ceremony Room. I shoot with flash, so dark and wet days still look bright. If you're up for it, a quick couple of minutes outside in the rain often makes the best shot of the day.
When is the best time for portraits at Merrydale Manor?
Golden hour and blue hour at the lake and jetty. In spring and summer that's in the evening, so leave a short gap in your timeline. In winter the light goes by late afternoon, so we go out soon after the ceremony.
How long do couple portraits take at Merrydale Manor?
Two or three 10 minute sessions: one while guests are seated for the wedding breakfast, one at golden hour, and one after dark if you want night photos. You're never away from your guests for long.
Can we get married in church and have our reception at Merrydale Manor?
Yes. Helen and James got married at St James Church in Didsbury, then came back to Merrydale for the reception. I covered both.
Can we have confetti at Merrydale Manor?
The Merrydale weddings I've shot have had confetti, from a full tunnel out of the Ceremony Room door to petals from wicker baskets, or inside down the aisle in winter. Check with the venue which type they allow.
Do you bring a second photographer?
Yes, two photographers come as standard with every package, never an optional extra. At a venue this size, with getting ready spread across the Manor House, the Lodge and the Cave, it makes a big difference.
How much is it to have you at Merrydale Manor?
Everything's on my pricing page, kept in one place so it's always up to date.
Hi, I'm Helen
I'm a Cheshire wedding photographer with 15 years and over 650 weddings behind me. I only take on 12 weddings a year, so you get me properly. I also co-run Flash Masters with Neil and teach photographers all over the world, which is a fancy way of saying I know what I'm doing when the light gets difficult.
