What Is a Wedding Photography Mentor, and Do You Need One?
A mentor isn’t a tutor standing at the front of a room. I’m a working wedding photographer, so mentoring with me is closer to having someone in your corner who has already made the mistakes you’re about to make, and who will tell you honestly what’s working in your photography and what isn’t.
Most photographers come to me at one of three points. They’ve been shooting weddings for a couple of years and feel like their work has plateaued. Or they’re technically confident but can’t quite articulate their style, so their bookings feel a bit random. Or flash has become the thing they quietly dread, and they want to walk into a dark reception room knowing exactly what they’re doing.
If any of those sound like you, mentoring will help. If you’ve never photographed a wedding at all, let’s talk first, because you may be better served by second shooting for a season before we work together.
I know that taking the leap could be scary, appear risky or expensive, but if our work together helps you secure just one booking, the mentoring has paid for itself. It's a much better spend than a new lens you don't really need!

I don’t teach photography to make things more complicated - I teach it so things finally 'click'
Before photography, I spent 10 years as a high school teacher, alongside mentoring and supporting trainee teachers. Helping people understand complex ideas, build confidence, and develop their own way of doing things has always been at the heart of what I do.
For the past 8 years, I’ve brought that experience into photography education, coaching professional photographers in flash confidence, creative decision‑making, and brand clarity. I don’t believe in one‑size‑fits‑all teaching — because no two photographers (or businesses) are the same.
My approach is grounded in:

My mentoring is designed to help photographers feel more confident in their work and clearer in how they present themselves online.
We start by looking at:
From there, sessions are shaped around you - whether that’s flash confidence, editing consistency, creative direction, full wedding critiques, or refining how you show up to the right clients. I also open up shadowing opportunities at real weddings to my mentoring clients first - these aren’t guaranteed but I try my best! Both options offer 2 hours per month, with flexible session formats.

Photography Mentoring FAQs
How does photography mentoring actually work?
We start with a free 30 minute call, no pressure and no sales script, just a conversation about where you are and what you want to change. If it feels like a good fit, we agree a package and set your session dates. Sessions run online, and if you’d rather work in person in Cheshire or the North West, that can be arranged too.
How much does a wedding photography mentor cost?
My mentoring packages start at £750 for three months of one to one support. I know that can feel like a big number, and I’d rather be upfront about it than make you email to find out. Put it this way, if our work together helps you secure one extra booking, the mentoring has paid for itself, and it’s a far better spend than a lens you don’t really need.
Do I need to be a wedding photographer to work with you?
Not at all. Most of the photographers I mentor shoot weddings, and that’s where my own work sits, but the things we cover, confidence, style, flash, pricing and running a business that doesn’t run you, apply to portrait and family photographers just as well.
Do you offer mentoring across the UK, or just locally?
Mentoring is online, so I work with photographers all over the UK and beyond. I’m based near Crewe in Cheshire, so in person sessions are very doable if you’re in the North West, the Midlands or anywhere within reasonable reach.
What if I only need help with one specific thing, like flash?
Then say so on the call. Not everyone needs a six month package. My Pick ‘n’ Mix option exists precisely because photographers turn up with very different gaps, and it’s a waste of your money to pay for the bits you’ve already nailed.
How is mentoring different from an online course?
A course tells 500 people the same thing. Mentoring looks at your photographs, your pricing, your website and your particular stuck point, and works from there. Courses are brilliant for learning a technique. Mentoring is for when you know roughly what to do and still can’t work out why it isn’t landing.
