Bride and groom posing together in the gardens at Salt House with the barn owl perched between them

Some weddings come with a plot twist. Rich and Jude’s had a barn owl flying the rings in halfway through the ceremony, in front of a garden full of guests who had absolutely no idea it was coming. More on that shortly. They married at Salt House, the red stone hall near Standon in Staffordshire, on the 23rd of May. Sixty four of them for the ceremony and the wedding breakfast. Another hundred arrived once the sun started to drop for the party. Sage green suits, a garden full of blooms, and somewhere in the middle of the schedule, a genuine surprise nobody in the congregation saw coming. Jude got ready upstairs at the venue. Rich was down in the groom’s room. Here is how the day went.

Getting ready

Jude’s morning was hairspray, champagne and a room full of people she loves. Hair went up first, one curl at a time, with a glass of fizz never far from anyone’s hand.

There was help fastening a bracelet, then a spritz of perfume next to a bundle of peonies and roses waiting to become her bouquet. Right at the end, a proper laugh with a family member fixing her earring, before the two of them headed downstairs.

Down in the groom’s room, Rich was already suited in sage green. He was doing a very good job of looking calm about it too. No last minute panics, no missing cufflinks, just a chat with one of the first guests through the door. That was about as much fuss as he needed.

The ceremony

Bridesmaids hugged it out in a doorway before anyone had gone anywhere near an aisle. Then the whole bridal party came down the grand staircase together, Jude leading the way.

Guests were seated out in the gardens, the hall sitting behind them like it had been built specifically for this. Jude arrived to hugs and hellos before she and Rich stood together to say their vows in front of everyone.

And then, the bit I still cannot quite believe I got to photograph. A barn owl, released clean across the garden, landing right on Rich’s glove with the rings tied on and waiting. The whole row of guests turned to watch it fly in. I have shot a lot of ring bearers. Never one with feathers.

Rings exchanged, marriage official, and a quiet minute signing the register together while everyone caught their breath from the owl.

Confetti and celebrations

Straight back out into confetti, no staging required, just sixty four people who were clearly thrilled it had actually happened.

Then the hugs started properly. One after another, in every direction, champagne going down almost as fast as it was being poured.

Portraits and family formals

Rich and Jude went back to visit their new feathered friend for a couple of portraits before family formals got underway.

Then the big group shot, guests thrown together on the lawn for the full headcount. A lot of cheering followed, once everyone realised they could finally stop posing. Sixty four people on one lawn takes some wrangling, and this lot were remarkably good sports about it.

Jude’s son had a lie down on the grass for a couple of frames, which turned out to be one of my favourite candid shots of the whole day.

A last few minutes together in among the roses before the wedding breakfast called everyone back inside.

Wedding breakfast

The light was already turning gold by the time everyone settled in for the wedding breakfast. Guests filled the lawns before heading in to find their seats.

Somewhere in the middle of it all, a small breakaway table of kids had commandeered a game of their own.

Speeches

Speeches came thick and fast, one speaker after another, papers in hand and the room laughing before most of them had got a full sentence out.

There were a few well placed jokes and at least one very good prop, and by the end of it the whole top table was in stitches.

Golden hour

Once the speeches and the plates were cleared, Rich and Jude slipped out for the portraits. This is the bit I look forward to at every wedding. The evening light at Salt House does something properly cinematic to everything it touches.

A walk under the fairy lights, then another over one of my mirrors laid flat on the grass for that reflection. The two of them barely needed direction from me by that point. Married a few hours and already completely in their own world.

Cake and first dance

Cake made an appearance while the room reset for the evening. A saxophonist took over to bring the energy up a notch as the evening guests started arriving.

First dance came with heart shaped lights scattered across the dance floor and at least one very confident dip. The room was fully on side for it.

The party

From there it did not slow down. A hundred evening guests arrived to join the sixty four who had been there all day. The noise level roughly doubled to match. A lounge full of laughing guests, a DJ under a disco ball who clearly knew what he was doing, and an outdoor fire pit lighting up the lawn while the dancing carried on behind it.

Sparklers came out for a proper glowing moment on the lawn, guests lined up either side. A kiss, caught in the middle of all that light.

And then it was just dancing. Friends singing at the top of their lungs, groomsmen making fools of themselves in the nicest possible way. Rich and Jude’s guests were still going strong long after most wedding parties would have called it a night.

That is the thing I will remember about this one. An owl doing the most important delivery of the day without missing a beat. A couple who looked completely delighted by every single bit of it. A dance floor that never really emptied. Salt House gave them the setting. Rich and Jude, and that owl, gave me the story. Congratulations you two. Thank you for having me, and thank you for the fizz.
